Taking my best shot

I was trying to do something here I’ve seen in some Manga books.  It’s supposed to be an illustration-effect where someone or something has been sprayed with bullets or energy blasts by some kind of automatic weapon. I tried to reproduce it here with only limited success.  I think I perpetrated one of my major faults on this one, which is adding too much detail.  I think less would have been “more” in this case.
